About This Specimen

This tooth shows distinct ridges and curvature typical of plesiosaur teeth, once used to snatch slippery prey from the ancient seas. The photos show the exact tooth you will receive.

About Zarafasaurus and Plesiosaurs

Plesiosaurs were marine reptiles with broad bodies, four flippers, and in many species, extremely long necks. Zarafasaurus oceanis was a long-necked elasmosaurid plesiosaur that swam the shallow seas over what is now Morocco at the very end of the Cretaceous, shortly before the extinction that ended the age of dinosaurs. Its teeth are long, slender, and curved, with fine ridges along the enamel, ideal for snatching fish and squid-like prey. Plesiosaurs lived alongside mosasaurs and sharks in these seas, and their teeth are a classic part of any marine reptile collection.

Where This Fossil Comes From: Khouribga, Morocco

The Oulad Abdoun Basin around Khouribga, Morocco, holds some of the largest phosphate deposits in the world. Its layers span the end of the Cretaceous into the Eocene, roughly 70 to 45 million years ago, and preserve an extraordinary record of ancient sea life, including mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, sea turtles, and huge numbers of shark teeth. Fossils are recovered as the phosphate is mined, and Khouribga is one of the most important marine fossil localities on Earth.
