This specimen represents an extinct ammonite, a marine cephalopod related to squid and octopuses. During fossilization, the shell underwent mineral replacement and diagenesis, resulting in its striking black coloration, often caused by organic-rich sediments or specific mineral compositions that darken the shell over tens of millions of years.

Cut ammonites provide a rare view into the internal anatomy of these ancient creatures. Once the fossil is sliced open, the internal chambers—formerly used for buoyancy—become visible, showcasing the septa, siphuncle pathways, and mineral-filled cavities that developed during fossilization. The polished finish enhances these structures, clearly displaying the geometric patterns that make ammonites so scientifically fascinating.

Black ammonites are especially valued by both paleontologists and collectors for their bold color, unique preservation, and ability to highlight internal features that are often overlooked.
