About Spinosaurus
Spinosaurus aegyptiacus was one of the largest predatory dinosaurs ever found, a long-snouted, sail-backed giant that lived along the river systems of North Africa about 95 million years ago. Its teeth are built for catching fish: tall, conical, and round in cross section, with no serrations and fine vertical ridges running along the enamel. Those ridges and the round, unserrated shape are the easiest way to tell a Spinosaurus tooth from the flatter, serrated teeth of Carcharodontosaurus and other meat-eaters found in the same rocks. Teeth over 2 inches with good enamel are especially desirable.
Where This Fossil Comes From: Kem Kem Beds, Morocco
The Kem Kem Beds of southeastern Morocco, near the town of Taouz and the Algerian border, preserve a river system from about 95 million years ago. These sandstones produce the teeth of Spinosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, abelisaurids, and other predators, along with fish, crocodile relatives, and pterosaurs. Local miners dig the fossils by hand from tunnels in the hillsides. Because the teeth are often found broken in the sandstone, professional repair is common and expected for Kem Kem material, and we always disclose it.
