About Iridescent Ammonites

Ammonites were shelled marine relatives of squid and octopus that filled the oceans for more than 300 million years before dying out with the dinosaurs. The iridescent ammonites from Madagascar, mostly Cleoniceras, date to the Early Cretaceous, about 110 million years ago. Their shells are made of aragonite, the same mineral as mother-of-pearl, laid down in microscopic layers. When light passes through those layers, it creates natural flashes of color, a structural effect rather than a pigment. Polishing reveals the shell surface and its color, and red is among the most sought-after shades.

Where This Fossil Comes From: Madagascar

Madagascar's ammonites come from Early Cretaceous marine rocks, about 110 million years old, in the northwest of the island near Mahajanga. Ammonites from these deposits often preserve their original aragonite shell, which is what gives them their natural color and shine, and many have chambers filled with calcite or agate. They are collected locally, then cleaned, cut, or polished to reveal the shell.
