About the Snaggletooth Shark (Hemipristis serra)

Hemipristis serra, the extinct snaggletooth shark, lived in warm coastal seas during the Miocene and Pliocene. Its upper teeth are some of the most striking of any fossil shark: broad, curved crowns with heavy, hooked serrations that stop short of a smooth tip. Its lower teeth were narrow and pointed for gripping prey. A smaller relative, Hemipristis elongata, still lives in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans today. Most fossil Hemipristis teeth measure under 1.5 inches, and teeth approaching 2 inches are uncommon and highly prized.

Where This Fossil Comes From: Bone Valley, Florida

Bone Valley is a phosphate mining district in central Florida, centered on Polk County, and one of the most productive fossil areas in North America. The fossils come from the Bone Valley Member of the Peace River Formation, Miocene to Pliocene sediments that are still mined for phosphate today. Teeth from Bone Valley are known for their range of natural colors, including gray, blue, tan, and multicolored enamel, and the area produces a wide variety of shark species, marine mammals, and land animals.
