About This Specimen

At over two inches, this is a large Hemipristis tooth, well above the size most collectors come across for the species. The blade shows a glossy golden amber and honey-colored enamel that shifts into blue-gray, olive, and warm orange tones near the bourlette, with fine natural crazing lines running through the enamel that give it a lot of character in the light. The serrations are large, hooked, and well-defined down both edges, and the textured tan-brown root is complete and robust. A small tip nick from feeding keeps the price down significantly, especially for a huge hemi.

Hemipristis teeth are especially prized for their aggressive curved shape and heavy serrations, which make them visually striking and easy to distinguish from other fossil shark species. Indonesian specimens add another layer of appeal with warm, translucent enamel colors you rarely see in teeth from U.S. localities.

All Fossil Driven fossils are guaranteed authentic, unrestored, and accurately photographed.

Where This Fossil Comes From

This tooth was recovered from marine sediments in Banten, the westernmost province of the island of Java. Millions of years ago, this region sat beneath warm, shallow tropical seas teeming with sharks, rays, and marine mammals. Over time, teeth shed by those sharks were buried, mineralized, and later uplifted and exposed, where they could be recovered by local collectors.

Java has become one of the most important sources of fossil shark teeth in Southeast Asia, known for colorful specimens of Megalodon, Great White, and Hemipristis. Because Indonesian shark teeth are frequently restored before reaching the market, every specimen we offer from this region is carefully inspected before it's listed.

About the Snaggletooth Shark (Hemipristis serra)

Hemipristis serra, commonly known as the extinct Snaggletooth Shark, lived in warm coastal oceans around the world during the Miocene and Pliocene. These sharks are easily recognized by their dramatically curved teeth, razor-sharp serrations, and robust roots, which resemble a blend of tiger shark and great white characteristics.

Hemipristis sharks were powerful predators that likely hunted bony fish and smaller marine animals in shallow seas. A single living relative, the Snaggletooth Shark (Hemipristis elongata), still swims in the Indo-Pacific today, including the waters around Indonesia, though its teeth are much smaller than those of its fossil ancestor.
