About Otodus obliquus
Otodus obliquus was a large predatory shark that lived from roughly 60 to 45 million years ago, in the Paleocene and Eocene. It sits near the beginning of the megatooth lineage that eventually led to megalodon. Its teeth have broad, triangular crowns with smooth edges and large side cusplets, very different from the serrated teeth of its famous descendant. Nearly all Otodus obliquus teeth on the market come from the phosphate deposits of Morocco.
Where This Fossil Comes From: Khouribga, Morocco
The Oulad Abdoun Basin around Khouribga, Morocco, holds some of the largest phosphate deposits in the world. Its layers span the end of the Cretaceous into the Eocene, roughly 70 to 45 million years ago, and preserve an extraordinary record of ancient sea life, including mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, sea turtles, and huge numbers of shark teeth. Fossils are recovered as the phosphate is mined, and Khouribga is one of the most important marine fossil localities on Earth.
