About Fossil Starfish and Brittle Stars
Starfish and brittle stars are echinoderms, relatives of sea urchins and sand dollars. Their skeletons are made of many small plates held together by soft tissue, so they usually fall apart soon after death, and complete fossils are uncommon. The fossils in our collection come from the Kataoua Formation of Morocco, Late Ordovician rocks around 450 million years old, where rapid burial preserved whole animals in fine detail. They are some of the oldest starfish fossils a collector can own.
Where This Fossil Comes From: Kaid Rami, Morocco
Kaid Rami, in the Anti-Atlas region of southern Morocco, exposes the Kataoua Formation, Late Ordovician marine rocks around 450 million years old. These rocks are known for complete starfish and brittle stars, preserved when sudden layers of sediment buried them on the sea floor before their skeletons could fall apart.
