Description

This is a genuine fossil tooth from Hemipristis serra, the extinct Snaggletooth Shark, recovered from river deposits in Java, Indonesia. At 1.35", this tooth shows the sharp, irregular serrations and curved crown that make the species so recognizable among shark tooth collectors.

Indonesian fossil shark teeth are typically found by local collectors working rivers and eroded banks on Java, where mineral-rich sediment has preserved teeth from ancient marine and estuarine environments. The dark, often glassy enamel seen on many Javanese specimens comes from the mineral content of the surrounding sediment during fossilization.

About the Snaggletooth Shark

Hemipristis serra was a powerful predator of warm coastal waters, known for its dramatically hooked, heavily serrated teeth, a blend of features reminiscent of both tiger and great white sharks. It's now extinct, but its fossilized teeth remain some of the most sought-after specimens for their bold shape and texture.
